Hi Gigi
We are relaxing in the sunny weather in Ohope but were sad to say goodbye to our van the other day in Christchurch. We had a wonderful time and experienced so many types of weather and landscape that it was hard to remember we were only in one country.
We started in Akaroa to get used to the van. As you advised in an early email, the larger van allowed us to keep the bed down and eat in the front area of the van. We travelled to Hokitika via Arthur's pass then visited the two famous glaciers. We stayed in several top 10 campsites but the pick of the bunch was the Fox glacier top 10 site. It had a large, clean family bathroom with a bath and double shower that wouldn't have been out of place in a top-class hotel. All of the campsites impressed us with their cleanliness, their social areas and friendliness of the staff. They certainly beat many sites we have visited in UK and Europe.
We loved Wanaka and went skiing in Queenstown. Then we headed up via Lake Tekapo, where we went to the hot pools while it was snowing. The late hand back time (4pm) allowed us to stay just north of Christchurch on our last night and then spend a day in the city centre where the effects of the earthquake are still so visible.
All in all we had a holiday to remember and we are very grateful for your help and advice organising our trip. I was apprehensive about camping in winter with a small child but was reassured by your advice and recommendations. The pick-up and hand back were hassle free. I know winter rates will be lower than summer rates but we were very pleased with the cost of the van hire and you can be sure than we will recommend you to any of our friends who are considering a trip to NZ.
Thanks again
Tony
